3D TV technology is not setting the world on fire. People are not running out to the stores in droves wanting to buy the latest 3D TV offering. You won’t find hundreds of movies just dripping off of the DVD tree to watch. What you will find is an emerging technology that is still getting some final tweaks as the support industries gather round and plan how to support and feed this 3D TV beast that appears to be the next colossal step in home entertainment options.
It looked bleak for awhile as one major manufacturer bailed out of their consumer 3D project while they were more than midstream in development. Those left however are more aggressive than ever and the movie and TV production industry is answering their challenge by making major moves toward content generation. The biggest boon for 3D TV comes with the announcement by Direct TV and the ESPN Sports network to develop individual channels for 3D only video content.
So while 3D isn’t taking over the HD TV viewing world, in the past two years it has firmly established itself as the next big thing to the extent of which we can’t even imagine yet. When the big screens started showing up at ceiling level in sports stadiums and arenas, only a few envisioned the massive wave of consumer wide screen HD TV that now are parked in living rooms around the world. What were giant innovative and very expensive commercial products soon became consumer friendly both technically and financially. That’s were we are with 3D TV today. Can’t wait to see what develops.
